Maathai says State has failed on security

The Government has failed to provide protection for its citizens and their property in the wake of post-election violence, Nobel laureate Prof Wangari Maathai said Tuesday. Speaking at her Green Belt Movement offices in Nairobi, Prof Maathai said it was unfortunate that many Kenyans had lost their lives and property in violence triggered by the disputed presidential election results.

She said although such clashes had a history, the Government had failed to deal with its instigators and perpetrators. Prof Maathai said the Government should ensure the rule of law is respected by all. More than 600 Kenyans have been killed and thousands displaced in clashes that erupted after President Kibaki was declared the winner of last December General Election.

The former Tetu legislator also called on politicians across the political divide to establish how to deal with the root causes of ethnic animosity in the country. She said the failure to honour the 2002 pre-election MoU between President Kibaki and the other members led by ODM leader Raila Odinga had entrenched the mistrust among the Kenyan leadership thereby hindering the spirit of negotiation.
