MPs forge unity to stop ethnic violence

Gusii and South Rift MPs have called for an end to violence along the Borabu/Bomet border. Dr Onsare Monda (Nyaribari Chache), Mr Charles Onyancha (Bonchari), Mr Chris Obure (Bobasi) and Omingo Magara (South Mugirango) and Pentagon member, Mr William Ruto, said the violence was not about politics. “We call upon the Provincial Administration to step in and end the atrocities committed at the border,” said Magara.

More than 20 people have been killed since the clashes broke out on Thursday. Thousands others have been displaced and more than 100 houses burnt. Ruto said Rift valley PC, Mr Noor Hassan, and his Nyanza counterpart, Mr Paul Olando, had given an assurance that they would stop the chaos. “We will lead a team of MPs from the two regions to bring this crisis to an end. This will involve meetings with local elders and youth,” Ruto added.

Monda said Rift Valley MPs had toured some of the affected areas to preach peace, adding that their Gusii counterparts would also join the efforts to seek a lasting solution.

Head of the mediation team, former UN General-Secretary, Mr Kofi Annan, last week called for an end to the border violence. South African business magnate, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, has also joined the mediation team. Ramaphosa, who is a former African National Congress secretary-general, is expected to take an active role in the process.
