AU Condemns Attacks on Gaza
Press Release—The African Union Commission has learnt with deep regret of the continuous deadly and indiscriminate attacks against civilian areas in Gaza Strip committed by the Israeli occupying forces since 28 February 2008, with at least 100 Palestinian civilians killed and around 300 others injured, including children and women.
The African Union strongly condemns these attacks, which cannot be justified under any circumstances and runs contrary to the basic norms of international humanitarian law. The security pretexts constantly used by Israel cannot justify the continued intentional attacks against innocent civilians and the systematic violation of their human rights.
The African Union calls on Israel to put an immediate end to its current campaign of aggression and to create conditions conducive to the search for a lasting solution to the current conflict.
The African Union strongly appeals to the UN Security Council and the members of the Quartet, the US-sponsored peace process in particular, to fully assume their responsibilities towards Palestinian occupied territories by compelling Israel to cease all its violations against the Palestinian people and to respect international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention. Furthermore, the African Union urges the international community to exert more efforts to help the two parties to implement their commitments to the Road Map Peace Plan for national sovereign independence of the Palestinian State with AL-Quds AL-Sahrif as its capital.
