AU Observer Team for Zimbabwe
(PANA) - Former Sierra Leonean President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah will lead a team of African Union (AU) observers to Zimbabwe’s presidential run -off election due to be held 27 June, the AU Commission announced here Saturday.
"It is important that the second round of the presidential election be held in a peaceful, free, transparent and fair manner," the Commission said.
Stressing that it would spare no effort to ensure that the ongoing electoral pro cess in the southern Africa country was successfully completed, the Commission pointed out that the AU observers would start arriving in Zimbabwe from Sunday, 15 June, at the invitation of the government.
The invitation followed visits by the AU Commission Chairperson Jean Ping to South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe last month.
However, the Commission has expressed concern over the reported incidents of violence and disruption of electoral activities in Zimbabwe, and stressed the need f or swift and effective action to address the situation.
It called on all concerned to ensure that the best possible conditions were created for the election.
