ECOWAS Observers for Zimbabwe Run-Off Election
Press Release—A 30-member ECOWAS observer mission, led by former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, leaves for Harare today to observe Zimbabwe’s 27th June 2008 presidential run-off elections.
Six members of staff of the ECOWAS Commission will support the delegation, which includes eminent persons from the region. It will observe the conduct of the forthcoming run-off presidential elections in Harare and other provinces of the Republic of Zimbabwe in a historic mission by ECOWAS.
According to the President of the Commission, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, this is the first time ECOWAS will be observing elections outside the region. He described the mission as a gesture of solidarity with the sister organisation, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the people of the Zimbabwe.
