China Donation for AU Troops

China on Monday donated $300,000 to assist the African Union in deploying peacekeepers in Somalia.

Receiving the donation, African Union Commission chairperson Alpha Ouma Konare appealed to the international community to support the deployment of more troops in Somalia.

Konare said that such assistance would help the African Union deploy the much-needed military force in Somalia, which would contribute to the stabilization of the country.

The Chinese ambassador to Ethiopia, Lin Lin said his government has been watching the latest developments in Somalia very closely and was interested in the internal dialogue in the country.

He said the donation was just a token as the Chinese government intended to continue to support the African Union efforts to bring peace to Somalia and other areas of conflict in Africa.

He reiterated the need for the international community to work hand in hand and be supportive of the African Union efforts to restore peace in the conflict areas within Africa.

“China believes that peace can be restored in Somalia through the African Union,” he added.

Since January, several African countries have pledged to send troops to Somalia but have been unable to do so due to financial constraints.

Currently, it is only Uganda that has managed to send 1,500 troops to Somalia.
