USAID Sign ECOWAS Development Pact

PANA—The United States Agency for International Development West Africa Office (USAID/West Africa) based in Accra, Ghana, has signed three agreement amendments with ECOWAS, totalling US$24.65 million, to support activities in trade, health and conflict mitigation.

Last year, US$36.16 million was provided in the three agreements.

The additional funds provided this year under the amendment brings the total to US$60.81 million provided to date.

The agreements were signed in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, Thursday by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mohammed Ibn Chambas, and the USAID West Africa Mission Director Jatinder Cheema.

Programmes under these agreements will support activities in the areas of trade and investment, health, including HIV/AIDS, conflict mitigation and governance.

Countries benefiting from the programme include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

The activities under the agreement will be implemented through ECOWAS and other regional organizations; grants and contracts between USAID and non-governmental organizations and public/private alliances.
