PAP Elects New Vice-President

Press Release—In a special Session today, the Pan African Parliament (PAP) elected Hon. Malik Al Hassan Yakubu from Ghana as its new Fourth Vice-President. Hon. Yakubu replaces the outgoing Dr. Theophile Nata, from Benin.

Hon. Yakubu contested the position against the MP from Burkina Faso, Hon. Mrs. Blandine Sawadogo, who is the current Chairperson of the Committee on Gender, Family, Youth and People with Disability.

According to the Rules of PAP the President and the four Vice-Presidents, who together constitute the Bureau of PAP, should represent the five sub-regions of Africa, namely northern, southern, eastern, western and central Africa. The position was vacated by the outgoing Fourth Vice- President Dr. Theophile Nata, from Benin. Consequently, it was up to the Western Africa Regional Caucus to put forward the candidates for the position from amongst its Members.

Hon. Yakubu, who is a lawyer by profession, is the current Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana and was Minister of Interior between January 2001 and March 2002.
