AU Observes World Aids Day

(Press Release)-In order to raise awareness on the impact of HIV/AIDS within the Continent, the Department of Social Affairs and the Division of Communication and Information of the African Union Commission (AUC) along side the UNAIDS, are jointly organising a series of sensitisation campaigns ahead of the World Aids Day, celebrated every 1st of December.

This year’s World Aids Days would be observed under the theme: "Leadership" and under the slogan: "Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise".

Commemorative activities to take place on the 30th of November 2007 at the plenary hall of the African Union Conference Centre, would be geared at educating the public, especially youth on prevention of infection and where necessary, timely access to treatment, care and support; Share experiences and express solidarity with those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS; and remember friends, colleagues and relatives who have succumbed to HIV/AIDS.

The commemorative activities shall include: organising educative programmes focusing on youths and adolescent to be implemented by all the Member States; Conceiving programmes of activities at the AU Commission and in some regional offices for various audiences; and Disseminating educational material and other memorabilia to the public.

Participants at the Commemoration of the World Aids Day at the African Union Commission Headquarters would include: Members of the Diplomatic Corps; Representatives of International Organizations; Representatives of Local Civil Society Organisation; Students from some schools and Staff of the AU Commission.
