AU Chairman Accepts Kenyan Invitation

(BuaNews)- President John Agyekum Kufuor of Ghana has accepted the invitation of President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya to visit that country in his capacity as African Union (AU) Chairman, to assess the situation there.

President Kufuor said he would make the trip as soon as possible, adding that Kenya had always been a flagship of Africa’s rising image and nothing should be done to destroy the country, according to Presidential Press Secretary and spokesperson Andrew Awuni.

Mr Kufuor indicated that, as AU chairman, he is concerned about the situation in Kenya and is willing to make his contribution to peace in that country.

Violence broke out in Kenya after the opposition disputed the 27 December presidential election results which gave victory to President Kibaki by a very slim margin.

According to a statement, President Kibaki said he was willing to enter into dialogue with the opposition without any pre-conditions.

The statement said that in a special message sent to President Kufuor, delivered by a Special Envoy, Moses Wetangula, President Kibaki said the situation in Kenya was returning to normal very quickly, except for small pockets of disturbances in the West of the country.

It said President Kibaki also expressed his commitment to forming a government of National Unity for the sake of peace and tranquillity in Kenya.

Reports say about 300 people have died in the violence with thousands of people displaced.
