AU Ponders Action against Coup Leaders
(PANA)--In view of the lack of progress towards the restoration of constitutional order in Mauritania as demanded by the Peace and Security Council (PSC), the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) will, in due course, submit concrete proposals on the way forward, the Commission said.
In a statement on the evolution of the situation in the West African country following the 6 August 2008 military overthrow of the democratically elected government, the Commission said Wednesday that the next move would aim to hasten the attainment of the objective being pursued.
In the meantime, AUC Chairperson Jean Ping has once again urged the authors of the military coup to reconsider their position in the supreme interest of Mauritania and to fully appreciate the determination of the AU and its Member States not to accept a fait accompli regarding the unconstitutional change of government. At his meeting Tuesday in Addis Ababa with a delegation sent by the coup leaders, Ping reiterated the AU position as determined by its relevant policy organs.
In the course of the past weeks, and as a follow-up to the decision of the PSC, the Chairperson of the Commission held intense consultations with the AU partners within the international community in order to mobilise further support for the AU efforts.
According to the statement, the Chairperson has welcomed the unanimous demand by the international community for the return to constitutional order in Mauritania and he has equally contacted leaders of the coup d’Etat to reiterate the demand of the PSC.
