ECOWAS Commends Guinea for Polls
(APA)--The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has congratulated the Electoral Commission of Bissau and the people of Guinea Bissau for the successful elections held on Sunday and their commitment to the ideals of democracy.
‘We wish to place on record the excellent quality of cooperation and assistance that we received from United Nation Office in Guinea Bissau,’ the ECOWAS Commission said in Abuja.
The Commission quoted a communiqué issued this week in Guinea Bissau by the ECOWAS Commission as saying ‘the electoral commission made adequate preparations for the election.’ It added, ‘the campaigns were conducted in a festive and colourful but a calm, civil and serene atmosphere. Voter turnout was highly impressive. Although voters were enthusiastic, they conducted themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner. Election officials displayed an admirable level of competence.’
It said that voting was done in accordance with internationally accepted practice and that it was peaceful and free and that the counting was transparent. The communiqué noted that late arrival of the election materials at Bissora and the late supply of indelible ink in some polling stations were among the minor pitfalls noticed during the Sunday election. ‘But these had very little effect on the overall conduct of the electoral process,’ it said.
