Summary Note on the AU Summit

Center for Citizens’ Participation in the African Union (CCP-AU)—The 10th Ordinary Summit largely focused on industrial development in Africa, the performance audit of the African Union, Union Government, elections of the AU Chairperson and the entire Commission as well as conflict in Kenya, Chad, Comoros and Somalia.

This Summit was remarkable in many ways as it generated huge public and institutional interest from Ethiopian civil society and Sudanese women’s organisations. The Summit was also disappointing in that the Commission provided no real assistance for accreditation for most of the CSOs.

Cost of Conflict

Press Release—The cost of conflict on African development was approximately $300bn between 1990 and 2005, according to new research by Oxfam International, IANSA and Saferworld. This is equal to the amount of money received in international aid during the same period.

Paris 2005 to Accra 2008

A draft policy paper (draft_cso_policy_paper.pdf) has been prepared by the International Civil Society Steering Group for the Accra High Level Forum. It aims to provide the basis for further discussions with civil society about the aid effectiveness agenda, in particular at the regional and national consultations planned for September-November 2007. It is hoped that these discussions will help to develop and prioritise the positions and recommendations of CSOs on aid effectiveness.
