African Farmers on Trade and Agriculture

(ACORD)--A Pan African delegation recently travelled to Berlin, Brussels, Madrid, Paris and London to engage European farmers, parliamentarians, civil society and media in discussions regarding the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) and the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) both instruments that risk having disastrous consequences on African small scale farmers.

World Downturn Squeezing Africa

Roy Laishley (Africa Renewal)--As the world’s economic woes deepen, Africa’s leaders are delivering a strong message to the international community that it must help the continent protect the development gains of recent years. Ahead of the April meeting of the Group of 20 (G-20), a high-level consultative body, African leaders met with its host, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in mid-March to tell him that donors must honour their commitments to increase aid, improve trade access and agree to a fairer, more flexible system of managing international financial affairs.

G8 Call for Tighter Investment Controls in Africa

(IRIN)--Minister of Food, Forest and Agricultural Policies Luca Zaia, chair of the Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting of the G8 + 5 (the developed countries plus China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico) to discuss the global food crisis, made the comment at a press conference that closed the second day of the conference, according to the G8 website.
