The Great Land Grab

(AfricaFiles)--Uganda’s parliament reacted when it heard about some 840.000 ha of land being leased to Egypt. Sudan has offered huge chunks of land to Arab countries. A US hedge fond persuaded a former warlord in Southern Sudan to provide over 400.000 ha for agricultural development. The Director General of the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), Jacques Diouf, called such land deals a type of ‘neo-colonialism.’

East and Horn of Africa HRDs Network

(Press Statement)--The Kampala Plan of Action (known as the KAPA) was officially adopted on the 16th May 2009 in Banjul, The Gambia. Its launch, which brings about the establishment of the Pan-African Human Rights Defenders Network, marks a significant step on the road to enhanced collaboration between regional human rights networks and towards a better protection of human rights defenders (HRDs) throughout Africa.

ACHPR NGO Forum

The African Centre will host the Forum on the participation of NGOs in the 45th Ordinary session of the African Commission from the 9th – 11th May, 2009 in Banjul, The Gambia while the Sessions of the African Commission would hold from 13th to 27th May, 2009. The forum will deliberate generally on the human rights situation in Africa in general and attempt to bring to the fore specific situations that need to be highlighted in order to attract the attention of the African Commission in particular and the international community and other concerned bodies.
