The Accra Declaration (ACCRAJuly2007AUSummitDECLARATION.pdf) adopted by the Heads of States at the conclusion of the African Union Summit. The Declaration reflects some of the demands of civil society, particularly in regards to “the importance of involving the African peoples in order to ensure that the African Union is a Union of peoples and not just a “Union of states and governments”, as well as the African Diaspora in the processes of economic and political integration of our continent” and the need for “freer movement of persons, goods, services and capital” as were elaborated in the final CSO Communique on the Grand Debate (Final_Accra_CSO_communique.pdf).

PRESS RELEASE N. 50/2007 - The five new members of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights have been elected.
Accra - 29 June 2007- The election of the five new members of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) (four women and one man, see list below), took place during the eleventh Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, in line with the the 9th African Union Summit in Accra, Ghana.

Nana Akufo-Addo, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana and Chairperson of the Executive Council of the African Union addressed the Executive Council on the 28th of June 2007.
“It is a distinct honour and a great pleasure for me to welcome, on behalf of the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor, the Government and people of Ghana, all of you, friends and colleagues, to a meeting of the Executive Council of our Union here in our capital of Accra. Akwaaba, as you know, is our traditional word of welcome. Akwaaba to each and every one of you, and we hope that your stay amongst us will be enjoyable."”

Abdoulie Janneh, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission on Africa addressed the opening ceremony of the Executive Council of the African Union on June 28, 2007. He stated: “I am glad to be here with you in this beautiful city of Accra for the Eleventh Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union. I wish to express through you, Mr. Chairman, our profound gratitude to your dynamic President, the Government and people of Ghana for their traditional warm hospitality.
This is in the true spirit of Pan-Africanism for which Ghana is well known and it is quite fitting that the Grand Debate on the African Union Government is taking place here, particularly as we all celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ghana’s independence.
