From May 8-9, 2007, the Executive Council of the African Union will hold a retreat of Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Durban, South Africa to debate the union government proposal in advance of the Heads of States Summit in June. The purpose of the retreat is to “undertake in-depth discussions on the nature of the continent’s integration agenda in order to determine where we are, where we are going, when and how to get there.” In addition to the retreat, the second conference of African Ministers in charge of Integration (Aide_Memoire_eng.doc) will be held on 7 – 11 June 2007 in Kigali, Rwanda, under the general theme ”Accelerating Regional Integration to Support the Growth and Development of our Countries”.

The Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) of the African Union is inviting African and African Diaspora civil society organizations to participate in the election of representatives to the ECOSOCC General Assembly scheduled to be held between June to December 2007. One hundred and thirty organizations will be elected to participate as candidates for election or as members of the Electoral College. In response to appeals from member states and CSO’s, the ECOSOCC Secretariat has extended the deadline to 15 May 2007 for receipt of applications for the elections. The English Application_for_ECOSOCC_election.doc and French Formulaire_de_candidature_ECOSOCC.doc applications can be found on the AU website. Interested civil society organizations should forward their applications electronically to cido at africa-union.org or by post to: The Credentials Committee, ECOSOCC Secretariat, c/o African Citizens Directorate (CIDO), African Union Commission, P.O. Open Society Institute says APRM Implementation Critical - Nairobi, April 30, 2007
Ordinary Kenyans have not felt a significant impact from the Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) process, a new report found. The report, commissioned by the Open Society Initiative for East Africa (OSIEA) and OSI’s Africa Governance Monitoring and Advocacy Project (AfriMAP), calls on the government to deliver a Programme of Action that will increase democratic space for Kenyans.

Interview with Joseph Yav, Institute for Security Studies.
Joseph Yav is a Senior Researcher for the Institute for Security Studies based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He works with a network of African research institutes in support of the African peace and security agenda. Saloman Kebede interviewed him on the upcoming “Grand Debate on the Union Government” to be held at the June 2007 summit of the African Union. The interview is part of a series of interviews, to be published in AU-Monitor, of African citizens and civil society leaders on the AU proposal for Continental Government. The interviews were conducted by the Pan Africa Programme of Oxfam in the corridors of a civil society meeting organized by UN-CONGO and FEMNET in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the week of the 13th March 2007.
