Gambia EFA Network to hold Child Assembly at AU Summit

Following a request by ANCEFA to have a slot in the AU Summit so that Civil Society voices can be heard on the AU assembly to be held in the Gambia in July 9th 2006, the Gambia EFA Network in collaboration with its partners(AA, CEF, Gambia Teachers Union, FAWE°) will hold a one day Child’sassembly to add children’s voices to the call for EFA.

Free expression and journalist organisations prevented from holding a Forum on freedom of expression

The Coordinating Committee set up by the Gambia government to oversee the African Union Summit has blocked the organisation of a forum on freedom of expression. In a letter sent on the 19th June 2006, to The Association of Non Governmental Organisations (TANGO) copied to the Kombo Beach Hotel where the Forum was supposed to be held, the General Coordinator of the summit, Mr. Bolong Sonko, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Gambia told the hotel management to put on hold the freedom of expression forum until government approves it.

Le Comité de Coordination mis sur pied par le gouvernement de la Gambie pour superviser le Sommet de l’Union Africaine s’est opposé à l’organisation d’un forum sur la liberté d’expression. Dans un courrier adressé le 19 juin 2006 à l’Association des Organisations Non Gouvernementales (TANGO) dont copie a été envoyée à l’hôtel Kombo Beach Hotel où le forum devait se tenir, le Coordinateur Général du sommet, M.Bolong Sonko, ancien Ministre des Affaires Etrangères de la Gambie, a demandé aux responsables de l’hôtel de surseoir au forum sur la liberté d’expression jusqu’à ce qu’il soit approuvé par le gouvernement.

Provisional programmes for SOAWR Banjul AU Summit activities

SOAWR will hold a series of activities during the African Union Summit in Banjul for its campaign on the domestication of the Protocol of the African Charter on Women’s Rights. A Public Forum, a Symposium and a Book Launch will give to activists, policy makers, women’s leaders and grassroots and civil society organisations the opportunity to debate about the core content of the Protocol and the necessity to implement the instruments that it provides for the promotion of African women’s rights.

- The Public Forum will be on the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women in Africa: The effect of cultural and traditional practices in the implementation of instruments promoting women’s Rights. 24th June 2006 from 8.30 am, at Kairaba Beach Hotel;

- The Symposium is on the African Union Protocol on Women’s Rights in Africa: Strategies for Domestication and Rights Realisation. 25th June 2006;

- The Launching of the book Breathing Life into the Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa is scheduled for 25th June from 6.00 pm.

UNIFEM to Participate in Pre-Summmit Women’s Forum

UNIFEM will be participating in the Pre-Summit Women’s Forum, and will make a presentation together with AU on our experiences of implementing 1325 and supporting Darfurian Women’s participation in the Abuja Peace Talks. Funmi Balogun Alexander will represent us at this meeting. Pleased to share a paper we did with Winnie in April on Darfur.
