A forum bringing together African civil society will be held in Addis Ababa (March 22-24) to explore ways of building partnerships for democratic governance through the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The forum, expected to bring together participants drawn from national, regional and international NGOs from Africa, will also examine opportunities for collaborating with and influencing key African institutions such as the African Union (AU), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD).

The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has joined the sceptical voices of civil society and Africa’s trade Ministers and warned that unchecked opening up of Africa’s markets to the European Union will destabilise Africa’s economies and marginalise African farmers. ECA warns that unless African negotiators gained substantial modifications in the agreements to curb European demands for rapid movement toward trade reciprocity, the agreements “will be very costly for Africa irrespective of how the issue is looked at, in terms of revenue losses, adjustment costs associated with de-industrialization and its undermining effect on regional integration.” Attached are excerpts from reports compiled by the ECA’s Trade Policy Centre on the subject.

Ghana’s election as chair of the African Union has been welcome by the Darfur Consortium, a coalition of civil society groups campaigning against the ongoing conflict in Darfur which was recently described by the new UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster. Attached is the Consortium’s press release on Ghana’s election.

The adoption by the African Union of a Charter on democracy, elections and governance has been welcome as an important step in raising a new threshold against which African governments should be judged. Now civil society organisations are calling for its popularisation and implementation at all levels amidst growing concern over violation of fundamental rights and freedoms in Africa’s theatres of conflict.
