Roundtable on the African Court

The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI), as the Eastern Africa focal point of the NGO Coalition for an Effective African Court on Human and Peoples ‘ Rights, together with the East African Law Society (EALS), are convening a two-day Roundtable on the African Court and Regional Human Rights Systems from the 31 March — 2 April 2008, at Impala Hotel, Arusha, Tanzania.

The Roundtable whose theme is "Strategies to Promote Human Rights through Regional Human Rights Systems aims at creating awareness of the African Court on Human and People’s Rights, facilitate interface with the Judges of the Court and to provide an opportunity for participants to share comparative experiences on regional human rights systems relevant to the African Court on Human Rights.

Further, the Alliances for Africa (AfA) as the Communications Secretariat of the Coalition for an Effective African Court (CEAC) will be organising a practical hands-on workshop Understanding the African Court Protocol – A workshop for Judges and Lawyers in West Africa from the 9th – 12th April 2008 at Dennis Hotel, Abuja, Nigeria.

Further, Alliances for Africa (AfA) as the Communications Secretariat of the Coalition for an Effective African Court (CEAC) will be organising a practical hands-on workshop Understanding the African Court Protocol – A workshop for Judges and Lawyers in West Africa from the 9th – 12th April 2008 at Dennis Hotel, Abuja, Nigeria.

This workshop aims to increase participants understanding of the African Court Protocol. The Speakers/Facilitators have varied experiences on International and Regional Courts and would be training on a range of topics including Jurisdiction of the African Court, independence of the Judiciary within the context of the African court, implications of the Merger of the African Court of Justice (ACJ) and the African Court and complementarity issues with national and other regional courts. Participants would be encouraged to share the experience gained in their respective organisations and countries.
