15th Session of AU Executive Council Begins
(PANA)--The 15th session of the executive council of the African Union (AU) started Sunday in Sirte, Libya, in the presence of Libyan Leader Mouammar Kadhafi.
The session is being held ahead of the 13th ordinary session of the conference of heads of states and government, under the theme: ‘Investing in agriculture for economic growth and food safety.’ The executive council of the African Union, which comprises of foreign ministers, has been working on a number of reports from different ministerial conferences organised under the aegis of the AU since the last summit, held in Ethiopian capital city of Addis Ababa in February this year.
However, the transformation of the African Union Commission into an Authority will undoubtedly be the main issue for the ministers. The council will also tackle different issues of continental interest submitted for examination at the meeting of the committee of Permanent Representatives of member states, which ended on Saturday in Sirte, central Libya.
Decisions as well as proposals are expected to be made at the end of the session of the foreign ministers on Tuesday and the outcome of the meeting will be submitted for adoption to heads of State and government, whose session is due to start on Wednesday also in Sirte.
Other important issues on the agenda of the executive council include the examination of the report of AU Commission chair Jean Ping as well as of the report on the implementation of the decision on the abuse of the principle of universal competence. The foreign ministers will also examine a number of issues proposed by member states.
