Ping Mourns with Zambians

(PANA)--African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Jean Ping has expressed his condolences to the family and the people of Zambia following the passing of President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa on 19 August 2008.

In his condolence message, Ping also expressed his solidarity and that of the African people with the people of Zambia during ‘this difficult period’. ‘The passing of President Mwanawasa is a great loss not only to the people of Zambia, but also to the Southern African region and the entire African continent’, he said.

The Chairperson recalled President Mwanawasa’s commitment to democratic values, his contribution to conflict resolution on the continent, as well as his commitment to African development and unity and to the principles and objectives of the AU.

The Zambia President died about two months after he suffered a stroke during the AU summit in Egypt, from where he was flown to Paris, France, for treatment.
