AU Chairman in Mauritania
(PANA) - The African Union (AU) Commission chairman, Jean Ping, arrived here Sunday on an official mission to Mauritania, official sources told PANA Monday.
During the visit, Ping is expected to meet with the new strongman in Nouakchott, General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who is heading the High State Council (HCE), the junta that seized power 6 August, to negotiate the release of the overthrown president, Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi and his Prime Minister and leader of the National Pact for Development and Democracy (PNDD-ADHIL), Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghef.
He will also meet with all political stakeholders and the civil society leaders in that country to find a solution to the constitutional crisis following the 6 August military coup.
The African Union (AU) strongly condemned the putsch and demanded the return to constitutional legality while suspending Mauritania in line with its charter.
The majority in the Mauritanian Parliament has pledged loyalty to the new military regime.
