No United States of Africa Without African Citizenship, Say Civil Society Leaders

This week 53 African foreign ministers will meet in Durban, South Africa, to discuss strategies to integrate African countries into a United States of Africa. Full political and economic integration leading to the United States of Africa has been the goal of the African Union since the body’s founding in 2002. However, the AU’s 53 members are still divided on harmonizing diverse economic and political communities.

On Wednesday, a day ahead of the AU meeting, key African civil society leaders will brief media on current proposals for continental government, and will call for widespread public consultations and national referendums on Continental Government. The media briefing will take place at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Durban. Civil society conveners of the press conference include the AU-Ghana Civil Society Coalition, the African Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development (ACORD) and Oxfam GB.
