AU Commission Hails Zimbabwe’s Political Deal
(PANA)--Hailing the power-sharing agreement reached Thursday by Zimbabwe’s ‘warring’ political parties, the African Union (AU) Commission President Jean Ping said the deal marked a turning point in efforts aimed at promoting reconciliation, stability and fostering conditions conducive for the recovery of the southern Africa country.
In a statement issued here late Friday, Ping commended the Zimbabwean parties for striking the agreement. He also expressed his appreciation for the leadership, skilful diplomacy and tireless efforts demonstrated by President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa in facilitating Zimbabwe’s inter-party political talks. The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) mandated Mbeki to mediate the talks.
Meanwhile, Ping has called on the international community to support the implementation of the agreement and provide the necessary assistance for its success. Details of the deal will be unveiled Monday when the parties sign the dotted lines.
