ICC Prosecutor to Meet UN, AU Officials

(PANA)--The prosecutor of the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC), Mr Luis Moreno-Ocampo, is in New York to meet with senior international actors on Sudan’s war-town Darfur region, ICC spokesperson Florence Olara told PANA Monday.

‘Our chief prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, will be discussing with UN and African Union officials on the sidelines of the General Assembly on the need to protect the civilians in Darfur, stop the crimes in Darfur and ensure the execution of the court’s judicial mandate and decisions,’ Olara said.

She also said: ‘the prosecutor will further present to the officials details of his findings on Darfur and crimes committed by some members of the Sudanese leadership.’ ‘We received a judicial mandate and we fulfilled it and the evidence showed that crimes against Darfurians were continuing today’, she added.

The spokesperson said‘Al-Bashir has complete control of his forces, and they are raping women today, they are promoting conditions in the camps to destroy entire communities and they are still bombing schools’.

She described the situation in Darfur as ‘an immense challenge for the political leaders of the world’, noting that, ‘they (leaders) have to protect the victims and ensure respect for the court decisions. ‘Those sought by the court have to face justice.Between criminals and 2.5 millions victims, they should make the right decision, ‘she added.

It is recalled that in July 2008, Moreno-Ocampo issued an arrest warrant against the Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir for allegedly committing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Darfur.

The ICCis an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes if national authorities with jurisdiction are unwilling or unable to do so genuinely. It is currently investigating crimes against humanity in the DR Congo, Northern Uganda, the Darfur region of Sudan and the Central African Republic.
