AU President in Brussels

(PANA)--The President of the Commission of the African Union, Jean Ping, arrived in Brussels Tuesday where he will take part, Wednesday, in a joint meeting of the Commissions of the AU and the European Union (EU), PANA learnt from European official sources in the Belgian capital.

Key among the agenda of the joint meeting is the suspension, for one year, of a request by France, of the judicial proceedings against Sudanese President Omar E l Bashir, against whom the prosecutor of the International penal court (ICC), Luis Moreno Ocampo, required the launching of an international arrest warrant for genocide and war crimes committed in Darfur in the western region of Sudan.

African countries mounted pressure on Ocampo to abandon the judicial proceedings against this African president who has defied the sanction.

The summit of the heads of state and government of the EU, meeting 15 October in Brussels, must approve the project of the European Pact on immigration proposed by Nicholas Sarkozy and which limits the chances of foreigners and in particular the Africans to migrate into Europe.

The project of European Pact on immigration prohibits the policy of massive regularisation of illegal immigrants pursued by Spain and Italy. The Commission of the AU is also expected to ask the European party not to tighten too much the chances of Africans to settle in Europe.

The consequences of the international financial crisis which involved the bankruptcy of several banks in the United States and threaten the banks in Europe will also be debated.
