AU Peace Operations Need Urgent Funding
(APA)--The African Union Commission on Wednesday called for urgent funding for its peace operations in the continent.
The call was made following the AU Peace and Security Council meeting held late on Tuesday in Addis Ababa with the members of the AU-UN High-Level Panel on the financing of AU-led peace support operations.
The panel, established by resolution 1809 of 2008 adopted by the UN Security Council on 16 April 2008, is chaired by Romano Prodi, former prime minister of Italy and chairperson of the European Union Commission.
The AU Peace and Security Council underscored the need and urgency for predictable, flexible and sustainable funding for AU-led peace support operations.
The AU is currently undertaking peacemaking a peacekeeping efforts in a number of African member states. It has deployed around 2,600 peacekeeping forces in Somalia and has another peace mission in Darfur, Sudan, jointly with the UN.
