Liberalisation of Air Transport Markets
(AllAfrica)--Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) are jointly organising the fourth meeting of the council of ministers responsible for civil aviation in Accra to agree on modalities for finalising the full liberalisation of air transport markets in the two regions.
About 40 participants, mostly ministers from the two regions and other stakeholders in the aviation sector, are attending the two-day meeting, which opens on Thursday. Among them are officials from the Agency for the Safety of Air Navigation in Africa (ASECNA), African Sky (ASKY), AIR CEMA, African Union (AU), Banjul Accord Group (BAG), Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA), African Association Airlines (AFRAA) and African Civil Association Commission (AFCAC).
Participants would consider the report of the fifth meeting of the Coordination & Monitoring Committee for the implementation of the Yamoussoukro Declaration concerning the liberalisation of access to air transport markets in Africa. This would enable them agree on modalities for realising the full liberalisation of air transport markets in West and Central Africa. Participants would also discuss aviation safety and security in the two regions -West and Central Africa and facilitation of the operations of the proposed two regional airlines -Air CEMAC and ASKY.
Ghana’s Vice-President, Aliu Mahama, is scheduled to open the meeting, which would also be attended by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Vice-President of CEMAC, Jean Marie Maguena, Secretary-General of AFRAA, Christian Folly-Kossi, and Secretary- General of AFCAC, Boubacar Djibo.
