AU Gives Zimbabwe $100,000 to Tackle Cholera
(APA)--The African Union (AU) Commission announced on Thursday a contribution of $100,000 to tackle the current cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe, APA has learnt.
The contribution was made towards Zimbabwe’s most serious cholera epidemic outbreak since August 2008. So far, over 700 people are reported to have died while over 15,000 people have been infected with the disease. ‘The Commission of the African Union is deeply concerned over the devastating cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe that has affected close to 16,000 people, and taken the lives of nearly 800 within a few days,’ said the AU.
‘The Commission wishes to convey its sympathy and support to the government and people of Zimbabwe, and has pledged a contribution of US$100,000 to assist the government in managing the crisis,’ the AU said. The Commission further appeals to member states of the AU and the larger international community to stand in solidarity with Zimbabwe and offer the assistance needed during this crucial period.
