Agreement to Strengthen Food Security
(PANA)--The African Union Commission on Thursday signed in Addis Ababa a memorandum of agreement with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) aimed at strengthening food security.
AU chairman Jean Ping signed the agreement with IFPRI director general Joachim Von Braun. IFPRI is a US based international organisation working on research related to agriculture and climate change. The agreement particularly aims at strengthening food security in Africa while consolidating the capacity of African countries to sustain and enhance food security.
The initiative will provide a better framework of finding solutions to food security issues, poverty alleviation, hunger and malnutrition, the AU said. Ping said the agreement would provide the necessary technical assistance to the commission and strengthens its capacity with respect to food security policies.
Braun said there was need for total attention to food security and related issues, including nutrition, health and agriculture, in Africa.
