Confirmed: Congo Brazzaville to head African Union
We’ve had confirmation that Congo-Brazzaville is the new president of the AU.
Apparently Lesotho (representing SADC), Algeria, Nigeria, Mozambique and Senegal delegates met with Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashi and persuaded him to withdraw his candidacy.
There was, apparently, a lengthy discussion on the floor and a further committee was set up to put a case for an alternative to the Sudan.
Congratulations to all of you who responded and acted on the call to prevent Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashi from taking over the AU at this critical point. I just hope no deals have been done that would put the lives of Darfurians further at risk!
