Senegalese Leader Hails AU Authority

(APA)--The transformation of the existing African Union (AU) Commission into an Authority of the Union, agreed upon at the last AU summit is a ‘milestone’ in achieving the ideals of Pan-Africanism, Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade said.

‘The decision is in line with history. It reflects the African people’s desire to achieve African Unity’, Wade said in a statement copied to APA Tuesday in Dakar. According to the Senegalese president, the setting of the Authority of the Union ‘included our continent’s destiny in that of the large sets, which determine, more than ever, the fate of the peoples of the world.’ This is at last the Pan-Africanist ideal that the Senegalese people and its leaders have always called for, the statement noted.

Recalling the events that led to the creation of the Authority of the Union, President Wade noted that the ‘debate on the Union Government has been long and difficult’. ‘It raised passions and strong convictions and revealed the diversity or differences of view about how to achieve the United States of Africa, the final stage of African integration,’ he said.

President Wade however acknowledged that the creation of the Authority of the Union does not mean the victory of one camp over another. ‘The road ahead remains long and fraught with obstacles, but we are on track to completing the project of the United States of Africa,’ Wade said.
