Members of Human and Peoples’ Rights Commission Elected
PRESS RELEASE N. 50/2007 - The five new members of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights have been elected.
Accra - 29 June 2007- The election of the five new members of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) (four women and one man, see list below), took place during the eleventh Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, in line with the the 9th African Union Summit in Accra, Ghana.
Fifteen candidates drawn from the African Union Member States competed for a six-year mandate on the one hand, and a two-year mandate on the other. Four of the fifteen candidates were elected for a six year mandate, while the fifth candidate was elected for a two year mandate.
According to the law provisions in conformity with the election procedures, only 48 out of the 53 Member States were authorized to present their candidates. The other five countries that did not honor their financial contributions were not allowed to present their candidates.
Worth noting that, the ACHPR constitute in all, eleven members.

3 Mrs. Catherine Dupe Atoki, Nigeria, 6 years

5 Mrs. Zainabu Sylvie Kayitesi, Rwanda, 2 years
