AU Audit Commission Member Appointed
Elvis Tah (The Post)—The President of the African Union, AU and Ghana’s Head of State, John Kufuor, has appointed Cameroonian born Vice President of Transparency International, Barrister Akere Tabeng Muna, member of the African Union Audit Commission.
This is contained in a memo, endorsed by both the President of the Union, Kufuor and the Chairman of the AU Commission, Malian born Alpha Oumar Konare.
According to the memo, BC/S3/1758.07, dated August 27, 2007, Muna’s appointment is in line with one of the resolutions, taken at the 9th summit of AU that took place in Accra, Ghana on July 3, 2007. The Audit Committee will be in charge of identifying the loopholes of the organisation and making important suggestions for the integration of the African continent.
The memo states that a team of consultants and resource persons will assist Muna and the other eminent Africans, who have been invited to be part of the Commission. They are expected to do a general auditing of the organisation, beginning from the date of its creation. These include AU specialised organs, institutions, programmes and activities.
The Commission is expected to complete its assignments on or before December 2007 and its findings will be examined at the next AU ordinary session slated for January 2008.
The terms of the Audit Commission will be forwarded to the selected members in the days ahead, while work is expected to begin soon in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
