Italian APRM Pledge
Daily Monitor—Italy on Tuesday pledged 300.000 USD to the African Peer Review Mechanism Secretariat.
Italy made the announcement in a personal letter Prime Minister wrote to African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare and to the Executive Secretary of NEPAD, Mukavele, according to a media release form the Italian embassy in Addis Ababa.
The media release said the contribution was made as part of Italy’s support to African countries in finding their own way to development, in the framework of NEPAD and with the help of the African Union.
“The African Peer Review Mechanism offers an important opportunity to the continent to improve the management of its own economy and human development and to fight corruption,” press release quoted from a speech of Italian Prime Minister addressing the African Union summit in Accra in July 2007.
According to the media release, Italy, with the contribution to APRM Secretariat, wants to launch a message of trust on the capabilities of African countries in carrying on the process of independent evaluation concerning their own advantages and weaknesses, in order to address the main problems on the way of economic and social development.
The APRM is a system introduced by the African Union to help countries improve their governance.
It is a way of looking forward while taking account of where they are today.
Participation in the system is voluntary.
A Panel of Eminent Persons appointed by the APRM Secretariat oversees its implementation throughout Africa.
