AU and UN Hail Kadhafi

(PANA)- The AU and UN envoys to Darfur have hailed Libyan leader Mouammar Kadhafi for his role in restoring peace to Sudan’s western Darfur region, wracked by four years of conflict that has claimed an estimated 200,000 lives and displaced over 2 million people.

In a statement issued here at the weekend, Salim Ahmed Salim and Jan Eliason also reaffirmed the support of the AU and the UN for the efforts which, they said, proved Libya’s commitment to peace in Darfur.

They pointed to the various consultations and conferences hosted by Col. Kadhafi as part of the general efforts to end the crisis, noting that the various meetings had paved the way for the ongoing Sirte talks.

They assured of the personal commitments of their respective bosses, Alpha Oumar Konare and Ban Ki-moon, to efforts to reach a peaceful settlement of crisis.

Stakeholders in the Darfur crisis converged on the Libyan city of Sirte 27 October in the latest attempt to find a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

The envoys said the Sirte talks had entered the second phase, which will include consultations with the various parties concerned and the neighbouring countries (Libya, Egypt, Chad and Eritrea).

They said the third stage would involve the hard negotiations on the thorny issues.

Shortly after the opening of the talks, the mediators reached out to the two key rebel groups that boycotted the talks in an attempt to bring them on board.
