Cuba and the African Union

(The Daily Monitor) - Cuban Vice President on a three day working visit here on Thursday met and held discussions with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Professor Alpha Oumar Konare.

During the one-hour discussion in the office of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Vice-President and the Chairperson expressed the need to reinforce the bilateral relationship existing between Cuba and the African Union in a bid to improve the socio-economic and political links between Cuba and Africa.

They also discussed current issues such as the awaited deployment of the UN-AU hybrid military troops in Darfur, the need to expedite the deployment of African troops in Somalia, the stages for achieving the Union Government leading to the creation of the United States of Africa; the agenda of the upcoming AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government billed for January/February in Addis Ababa, amongst other things, according to AU media statement.

Konare expressed the need for Cuba and the African Union to hold consultative meetings to identify areas of cooperation that would be beneficial to the African and the Cuban peoples.

The Chairperson of the Commission also encouraged Cuban assistance to Africa in areas such as Health and medical research emphasising the historical links between Africa and Cuba that is made up of many peoples from African origin, thus, the need to enhanced solidarity for the development of the African Continent.

Mr. Estaban Lazo HERNANDEZ on his part thanked Chairperson Konare for accepting to reinforce the cooperation ties between Africa and Cuba, the statement indicated, adding V. President HERNANDEZ assured Konare of Cuba’s assistance to the African Union in realizing its goals.
