UNAMID Convoy Ambushed
(PANA) - A UNAMID supplies convoy was attacked Monday night, on its way from Um Baru to Tine in Western Darfur, according to a statement issued here Tuesday by the UN/AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).
‘’The road convoy was on a re-supply mission to UNAMID team sites in the area between Um Baru, Tine and Kulbus, an area which has witnessed violent clashes between the government of Sudan and rebel movements, and where UNAMID air operations have been restricted due to the security concerns,’’ UNAMID said.
It said initial reports suggested that a Sudanese civilian driver suffered seven shots and is in a critical condition.
The driver has already been evacuated to the UNAMID headquarters in El Fasher.
‘’UNAMID did not return fire and no UNAMID casualties were incurred during the attack. A diesel truck and a UNAMID Armed Personnel Carrier were also damaged,’’ the mission said.
It said UNAMID was currently maintaining a high state of alert, and that investigation into the incident was underway.
On 31 December, UNAMID formally took over from the African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS), which has been struggling to maintain peace in Darfur, where an estimated 200,000 have been killed and over 2 million displaced in four years of fighting between government and rebel forces over resources.
At full deployment, UNAMID will have 26,000 troops, making it the largest peacekeeping mission in the world.
