Audit Revealed Malfunctioning

(PANA) - Senegalese foreign minister Cheikh Tidiane Gadio on Tuesday said in Dakar that the audit of the African Union (AU) had revealed serious malfunctioning of its organs and called for the continent to rebuild its unity around key issues.

Gadio, who was speaking in a press conference after the African heads of state summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, noted that the real problem of the Union was a lack of political will from the African leaders, stressing that the auditors did a considerable amount of work that should be taken into account.

This audit carried out at the request of the AU heads of state and government during the Accra summit in July was led by a panel of high-level experts appointed by the continental organisation.

The audit carried out between 10 September and 18 December analysed in detail the Union’s organs and institutions as well as the nature of the relations between them.

“The audit report stresses first the discrepancy between the duration of the summits and their agendas. As the heads of state meeting was planned to last for two days, they were expected to arrive at the venue at least one day before. However, in practice, many leaders arrive on the day of the meeting,” Gadio said.

The African heads of state summit held in Addis Ababa from 31 January to 2 February appointed Tanzania’s Jakaya Kikwete as AU chairperson and Gabonese foreign minister Jean Ping as AU Commission chairperson.
