African Women Should be Educated

(PANA)--Visiting African Union (AU) chairman and Libyan leader Mouammar Kadhafi has called for the education of African women to enable them take their rightful places in the society.

The AU chairman made the call in Banjul, The Gambia, where is the special guest of President Yahya Jammeh on the 15th anniversary of his ascension to office. The Libyan leader spoke at a meeting with Gambian women at the Jerma beach on Wednesday, noting that a woman should be educated to the extent that the government, the society and the people, needs her services in general.

He commended President Jammeh for his women empowerment initiative, especially the appointment of women to top government positions, including the vice presidency. ‘As a matter of fact, women should think above the men about the future of Africa,’ he told the meeting. The Libyan leader also noted that children, as future leaders, should be given attention, saying this was the reason behind his proposed draft law to the AU, aimed at advancing the cause of children.

The Libyan leader used the opportunity to stress the need for the continent to unite, adding that there is no future for the continent without unity. He said he was moved by the warm and hospitable reception accorded him and his delegation in The Gambia, noting that such reception showed that Gambians are happy and contented with the social, political, economic and security situa tion in their country.
