AMIS Transition to UNAMID
(PANA)-The AU-UN Joint Special Representative and AMIS Head of Mission, Mr.Rodolphe Adada and the Assistant to Sudanese President on Darfur, Dr . Nafie Ali Nafie, Monday reviewed the preparations for the transition of authority from the African Mission in Sudan (AMIS) to UNAMID.
This clarified issues concerning the function of some AU mechanisms after the transition, such as the Ceasefire Commission (CFC) and the Joint Commission.
Dr. Nafie reiterated his government’s commitment to the smooth transfer of authority from AMIS to UNAMID and cooperation with the mission to carry out its mandate.
At the event, Adada appealed for cessation of hostilities by all Sudanese partie s on the eve of UNAMID deployment, particularly during this holy period, when Muslims and Christians will be celebrating Eid-el-Kabir and Christmas.
He said such cessation of hostilities would allow the Sudanese people in general , and Darfurians in particular, to celebrate the Eid in peace and tranquility, and this will in turn create the environment conducive to the success of the on-going peace process.
It is recalled that four unidentified gunmen last Friday attacked the vehicle of AMIS military Chief of Staff, near AMIS camp in Al-Fashir.
The vehicle has been seized by the assailants and the driver injured, but the Chief of Staff safely survived the attack.
Referring to the attack, Adada, discussed with North Darfur State Governor, Osman Mohamed Yousif Kibir, Sunday in Al-Fashir, on security issues related to the ( U NAMID).
