AU Stresses Africa’s Willingness to Solve Conflicts
(PANA)--The special summit of African Union (AU) on conflict resolution in Africa will reflect the clear commitment of African leaders to resolve conflicts in the continent by themselves, the AU Commissioner for peace and security, Ramdhan Lamamra, told PANA on Sunday.
In an interview with PANA, alongside the meetings of the AU Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREP), Lamamra declared that deliberations so far had shown that Africa was determined to settle its conflicts by itself. The COREP meeting looked at the crisis in Somalia, Darfur (western Sudan), the Great Lakes region, and post-conflict reconstruction and development. Lamamra said that resolutions to be taken at the summit would reflect this new thinking in the continent.
Regarding Darfur, Lamamra said that the meeting reviewed the deployment of the hybrid AU/UN peacekeeping force, and the humanitarian situation in the area. He said the joint UN and AU mediator in Darfur, Djbril Bassoul, briefed participants on efforts to unify the armed movements so that the international talks in Doha, Qatar, could reach an agreement before the general elections slated for April in Sudan.
Regarding Somalia, the AU official said that Africa would support the policy and action of the transitional federal government and the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISON).
On the Great Lakes, Lamamra said relations between member countries had normalised after which efforts were now being made to re-launch the inclusive political process to cushion the effects of the difficult conditions existing in some of those countries
