AU Urged to Send Pre-election Team to Sudan

(APA)--The peace and security council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) on Friday urged the AU commission to dispatch a ‘pre-election team’ to Sudan.

The call was made after the PSC convened a meeting on 25 August on the current political situation in that country. Accordingly, the commission announced on Friday that the pre-election team will be tasked to meet the Sudanese government and other stakeholders that are involved in the preparations for the elections, assess the readiness of the Sudanese electoral process, and review the state of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between north and south Sudan. The election is scheduled to be held in 2010.

The CPA was signed a couple of years back between the Sudanese government and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA).

In its communiqué, the PSC expressed grave concern at the deteriorating security situation in South Sudan and other war-affected areas exacerbated by inter- and intra-tribal armed conflicts. It also expressed grave concern over the continued threats posed by Uganda’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels to the security and humanitarian situation in Southern Sudan.

The PSC further called on the international community to exert pressure on the LRA to sign the final peace agreement in the context of the Juba Peace Process.
