AU Urged to Set up Research Foundation

(PANA)--The chief education officer of Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal, Prof. Abdou Salam Sall, has urged the African Union (AU) to set up a research foundation to ginger African researchers into action.

‘This foundation is expected to make researches more inter-disciplinary in African countries and particularly help increase human resources in the continent and the African diaspora,’ he told PANA in an interview.

The Senegalese scholar said Africa could be part of the global ‘economy of knowledge’ if it engaged in research and innovation strategy led by the AU. ‘African researchers, whether they are in the continent or elsewhere in the world, have proved that they can master highly-specialised disciplines. They only need to be given the means so they can use the outcome of their efforts for the benefit of Africa’, Prof. Sall said. He said African could not continue to rely indefinitely on others to finance the research and training of its academicians, despite the existence of several initiatives aimed at funding research and development projects.

The scholar said the proposed foundation would help find African solutions to the problems of research in the continent
