Integration of Polices into Peacekeeping
(PANA)--The head of the planning operations at the peacekeeping department of the African Union Commission, Lieutenant-colonel Christophe Touko, has stressed the need for Africa to set up a peacekeeping force able to restore and keep law and peace on the continent.
In an interview with PANA on Wednesday in Tripoli during the second day of the consultative seminar on police units belonging to the African reserve forces which come under the control of the African Union (AU), he declared that these police units can be involved in peacekeeping missions under the control of the African Union in several other African countries.
The Tripoli meeting aims at setting up a general policy for the operation of trained police units and to complete the standard operational procedures. Touko added that the Tripoli seminar will also look into the drafting of a manual that will serve as guide for policemen and gendarmes who take part in peacekeeping operations on the continent.
The seminar will also deal with issues related to employment, training as well as anything that can contribute to the efficiency of these police units ready to be deployed on Africa, if need be, to keep peace and restore law.
