Sudan likely to give up chair of AU

News is coming in that Sudan is likely to give up its claim to the Chair of the African Union. According to the BBC, Sudan wishes to avoid splits within the organisation, Sudan’s presidential adviser told the BBC: “We don’t want to make any cracks. If that means Sudan should withdraw, we will,” Mustafa Osman Ismail said, as AU leaders met at a summit in Khartoum (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4640804.stm).

There is little doubt that the pressure mounted by African Civil Society Organisations has contributed to this. According to one source, a five-state committe is to recommend Congo Brazzaville for the chair, although this has not been confirmed. Obasanjo could still be asked to continue.

Further news to come shortly.
