The Private Sector and Corporate Citizenship

Press Release - The second African Private Sector Forum begins Tuesday 22 January 2008, at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme: " Africa’s Industrial Drive: The Private Sector and Corporate Citizenship". The theme of the Forum ties with the theme of the 10th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly : "Industrial Development of Africa".

Jointly organised by the African Union Commission and the United Nations Global Compact, the two-day Forum will be co-chaired by the Commissioner for Economic Affairs of the African Union, Dr. Maxwell Mkwezalamba, the General Manager of the United Nations Global Compact, Geog Kell and the Minister of Trade of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Girma Biru.

Holding some few days to the 10th African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government, the second edition of the African Private Sector Forum falls in line with the African Union policy of setting up a strong private sector network as a means of fast-tracking Africa’s economic integration, growth and development. Serving therefore as a key instrument of interface between the AU and the private sector, the African Union has made the private sector a priority area for industrial development within the African continent.

The objective of this Forum is to sensitise the African population on the available investment opportunities as well as the promotion of good governance and mobilisation of professional know-how in the business world as promoted by the United Nations Global Compact. Meanwhile, the UN Global Compact comprises of about 4500 corporate enterprises.

The second edition of the African Private Sector Forum ends on Wednesday 23 January 2008.
