Dust From Our Eyes cover Dust From Our Eyes
An Unblinkered Look at Africa
Joan Baxter

Joan Baxter eloquently exposes the diversity of Africa, the injustices Africans have faced and the strengths that have helped them weather adversity. She erodes the tired stereotypes of the western media and provides compelling evidence of the need for westerners to scrutinise their own countries' policies at home and abroad.

Demystifying Aid This pamphlet from Pambazuka Press shows that 'development aid' is not what it purports to be - the effects of actions of well-meaning allies in the North who support aid to Africa for reasons of ethics or solidarity are, unfortunately, the opposite of their good intentions.

Perspectives on Emerging Powers in Africa: December 2011 newsletter

Deborah Brautigam provides an overview and description of China's development finance to Africa. "Looking at the nature of Chinese development aid - and non-aid - to Africa provides insights into China's strategic approach to outward investment and economic diplomacy, even if exact figures and strategies are not easily ascertained", she states as she describes China's provision of grants, zero-interest loans and concessional loans. Pambazuka Press recently released a publication titled India in Africa: Changing Geographies of Power, and Oliver Stuenkel provides his review of the book.

How can I subscribe to Pambazuka podcasts?

The easiest way is to use these iTunes Store Links - Pambazuka Podcast and Pambazuka Videocast. If you have iTunes on your computer you will be taken straight to the subscribe page, or if not will be directed to download iTunes.

Normally there are three steps involved in setting up your personal computer to receive podcasts.

You need to install a piece of software which will search the web to find the latest episode and automatically deliver it to your computer.

This software is usually free. These are three popular versions:

iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/)

Juice (http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/index.php)

Doppler (http://www.dopplerradio.net/)

Always read the set-up and help guides for new software.

Once you have the software installed you need to subscribe to the Pambazuka podcasts. How you do this will vary depending on which software you have chosen, but first you will need to copy the link from the box below.

RSS 2.0 Pambazuka News Podcast

If you have iTunes

You can subscribe to the Pambazuka podcasts by choosing ‘subscribe to podcast...’ from the ‘Advanced’ Menu. Then paste the link into the box.

If you have Juice, Doppler or other podcast software

If you have Juice, Doppler or another piece of software then this is likely to be the method you will need to follow.

In all of these cases you need to add the 'feed' of the podcast to your software. The feed is really just the address of the podcast, which the software will go to each time it wants to check for a new episode.

You will need to copy the feed address from the box above and paste it into your podcast software. How you do this will depend on your software, but you should look out for buttons or links that say 'Add' or 'Subscribe'.

Listen to the audio

When a new episode becomes available for the podcast you have subscribed to, your software will automatically download it. For audio, you can then listen to this episode on your computer or transfer it to your portable player to listen to later. Note that for video, the episode should play on your computer but it will only play on certain portable players and mobile phones (the video is in mp4 format). Please check with the manufacturer of your device.

You may want to check the settings of your podcast software for details including how often it will check for new episodes, whether it will keep old episodes for you, etc. This will vary depending on the software you have chosen, and your personal preferences.

If you decide that you no longer want to receive podcast episodes then it should be very easy to unsubscribe. Again, how you do this will depend on your software, but you should look for 'Clear' or 'Unsubscribe' options.

What is a podcast?

Podcasting lets you automatically receive the latest episode of your chosen programme as soon as it's available. You need to 'subscribe' to receive a podcast, rather like you might subscribe to a magazine and get it delivered each week. An important difference is that all of Pambazuka podcasts are free, and you can stop receiving the files at any time. In order to sign up for a podcast you need an internet connection and a piece of free podcast software.

Can I listen to the broadcasts without subscribing to the podcast?

Each separate episode is listed on the Podcasts page, just below the description is a ‘Listen’ link. These are direct links to the audio files. You will need QuickTime or similar software installed on your computer to listen to the broadcast.

Can I broadcast the Pambazuka broadcasts on my radio station?

Thank you for your interest in bringing Pambazuka to your community. One of our most important goals is to bring the voices from our Pambazuka broadcasts to a wider audience. For this reason we can provide broadcast-quality versions. Contact multimedia@pambazuka.org for more information.

The podcast sounds muffled - why is this?

We have tried to provide the highest audio quality we can, whilst still allowing as many users as possible to download the files. If we were to provide higher quality audio files this would prevent many users from being able to download them as the file size would become unmanageable for all but the privileged few who have advanced and therefore expensive internet access. Let us know what you think!
