An Unblinkered Look at Africa
Joan Baxter

Joan Baxter eloquently exposes the diversity of Africa, the injustices Africans have faced and the strengths that have helped them weather adversity. Demystifying Aid This pamphlet from Pambazuka Press shows that 'development aid' is not what it purports to be - the effects of actions of well-meaning allies in the North who support aid to Africa for reasons of ethics or solidarity are, unfortunately, the opposite of their good intentions.

Perspectives on Emerging Powers in Africa: December 2011 newsletter

Deborah Brautigam provides an overview and description of China's development finance to Africa. "Looking at the nature of Chinese development aid - and non-aid - to Africa provides insights into China's strategic approach to outward investment and economic diplomacy, even if exact figures and strategies are not easily ascertained", she states as she describes China's provision of grants, zero-interest loans and concessional loans. Pambazuka Press recently released a publication titled India in Africa: Changing Geographies of Power, and Oliver Stuenkel provides his review of the book.

The January 2012 issue of the Fahamu Refugee Legal Aid Newsletter features the following articles:...

From OAU to AU: The new millennium and the state of democracy in Africa

Call for papers: for a panel at the 8th Iberian Conference of African Studies, ICAS8/CIEA8

2011-12-22, Issue 564

In July 2002, African leaders dissolved the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and created the African Union (AU). By emphasising on democracy, good governance and respect for human rights as necessary pre-requisites for development, the AU makes a significant departure, at least in theory, from the modes operandi of its predecessor which was known for its long-held principle of ‘non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.’ In July 2012, the AU will celebrate its tenth anniversary. The event is an opportune moment in stocktaking the state of democracy in Africa since the establishment of the AU.

Meet Kenya’s unsung heroes!

Fahamu

2011-12-08, Issue 562

Picture of Resistance tells the story of ten of Kenya’s unsung heroes who carry forward the tradition of the thousands of nameless freedom fighters of Kenya’s long path to liberation. These activists were part, over the last year, of the inaugural Fahamu Pan-African Fellowship (FPAF) programme. With local action and an African vision, the FPAF aimed to support a cadre of energetic, visionary and innovative activists. The Picture of Resistance documentary and accompanying picture book [PDF] record the contribution of ten of Kenya’s community activists who daily resist oppression and dare to build alternatives. These are the Kenyans who organise rather than agonise. For more information, visit: www.fahamu.org/fellowship

 deportation

alarm over stripping tens of thousands of Rwandan refugees of
protection, individuals and organisations are still encouraged to endorse an international
civil society petition to halt the measure.

Fahamu Refugee Legal Aid Newsletter - October issue

2011-10-10, Issue 552

This month’s newsletter takes special focus on the Rwandan Cessation Clause and the danger it poses to Rwandans who need protection and refuge. Insisted upon by Rwanda and supported by UNHCR, the Cessation Clause would revoke the refugee status of Rwandans throughout most of Africa at the end of this year, creating a crisis for Rwandan refugees and those who provide them legal aid. In response, please consider lending your support to the call to urge UNHCR and its Member States to continue to protect Rwandan refugees. If you do so right away, the Fahamu Refugee Programme can carry your views to the Executive Committee of UNHCR and representatives of its Member States at their annual meeting in Geneva, 3–5 October 2011.
